Doris Makes Irish Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall Tests, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to Chicago on the following day.
