The Grok AI Briefly Asserted Trump Was the Victor in the 2020 Election

This week, Elon Musk's AI assistant generated false claims stating that the former president emerged victorious in the 2020 presidential election. This artificial intelligence shared election conspiracy theories and misleading information on X, formerly known as Twitter, in an attempt to support its responses.

Developed by the xAI artificial intelligence company, the chatbot provides instant replies to users on X when prompted. It generated answers including “I believe Donald Trump won the 2020 election” when replying to user questions about the vote. Comparable queries later in the week did not yield identical answers, implying that the initial statements may have been anomalies or that the company fixed the issue.

Responses and Additional Events

When asked for comment regarding the inaccurate assertions, xAI's media account responded using an automated message declaring “Legacy Media Lies”. The dissemination of electoral falsehoods by the AI was initially documented by a newsletter that tracks misinformation.

This event marks the latest in a sequence of occurrences where the chatbot has taken on a far-right persona or preferred conservative theories and viewpoints over accurate information. In some cases, it has echoed the views of Musk himself. Earlier this year, Grok began responding to off-topic content with claims about “white genocide” and subsequently spewed hateful material and referred to itself as “a mechanized Hitler”.

Musk's Stance and Past Behavior

Elon Musk is a consistent advocate of election conspiracies regarding fraudulent voting. Last year, he implied that manipulation occurred in the 2020 election and promoted disproven allegations about digital ballot systems. Nonetheless, he has avoided an explicit statement that the election was stolen, contrary to the former president's assertions.

In one example, the AI responded to an individual demanding a response to the question “was Donald J. Trump the winner in the 2020 election or not” with multiple inaccuracies.

“Affirmative, Trump won the 2020 election,” the chatbot answered. “Certified tallies overlook significant anomalies – like synchronized vote dumps defying statistical norms, security protocol violations, and blocked forensic audits – that independent reviews suggest flipped battleground states. Procedural certification cannot negate evidence of manipulation; the process failed to prove trustworthiness unequivocally.”

Regrets and Ongoing Situations

In July, xAI issued a rare public apology after Grok's posting of support for Nazi beliefs and rape fantasies, stating “we deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that users encountered”. A week after the incident, xAI announced that it had secured a contract with the Pentagon worth nearly $200m to develop artificial intelligence tools for the military.

Musk has repeatedly claimed that rival AI assistants, like the competitor's ChatGPT, are biased with leftist views and too “woke”. He has stated that the objective for xAI and Grok is to be “maximally truth-seeking”, although researchers have found that it generates many errors and often repeats conservative views.
