Trump Suggests Removal of World Cup Games from Boston, Olympic Games from California
Former President Trump has repeatedly declared he would pressure FIFA to relocate upcoming World Cup matches from a venue based on that city's politics, with Massachusetts emerging as the most recent targeted location to receive such statements from the US president. Moreover, Trump indicated he would evaluate parallel steps against Southern California for the 2028 Olympics due to possible public safety risks.
Legal Authority and Informal Leverage
Although Trump lacks direct legal authority to personally cancel either competition, he can lobby the organizing committees overseeing each event to change venues.
Setting for Statements
His remarks were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was at the executive mansion following the announcement of a massive bailout for the Latin American country. At the end of the event, a reporter questioned Trump about a recent “street takeover” in the city where police officers were targeted and a police vehicle was burned. The reporter also asked if such events could lead to the removal of hosting duties for the expanded football competition.
“We could take them away,” Trump said concerning the soccer fixtures, scheduled to be staged at the Massachusetts arena. “She is ineffective … she is far-left, and activists are taking over areas of Boston. That’s a significant statement, don't you think?”
Urban Disturbances and Ideological Perceptions
Unauthorized gatherings, a online-fueled occurrence where groups of people assemble on urban roads after dark to conduct vehicular acrobatics, have been a ongoing nuisance in American cities since the lockdown shutdowns. Current such gatherings have escalated into violence in the state, including the city. Nevertheless, these gatherings are typically not considered linked to any distinct political ideology.
“If a mayor is performing poorly, and I believe there’s dangerous circumstances, I would call the organization's president, who is excellent, and tell him let’s move it to an alternate venue,” he commented on Tuesday. “He'd do that. He wouldn’t love doing it, but he'd agree. Very easily, he'd comply.”
Political Connections
The organization's head has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be publicly aligned with Trump ahead of the upcoming World Cup, planned to be organized in multiple US locations across the United States along with several in the northern neighbor and a few in Mexico. The head has participated at several White House gatherings, arranged for Trump hand over the club tournament cup after the concluding game, and has even delayed his the group's assembly to travel with Trump on a visit to the Middle East previously.
Past Statements
This has not stopped, Trump from suggesting the relocation of World Cup matches from additional American venues. Recently, Seattle and the Bay Area metropolis came under comparable statements, with Trump claiming both urban centers were “governed by far-left extremists who are clueless what they’re doing,” while challenging the security conditions of both cities and suggesting that matches could be shifted.
Organizational Statement
FIFA vice-president Montagliani dismissed Trump’s statements when he commented days later at a conference in England.
“It is FIFA’s tournament, under our authority, the organization determines these matters,” Montagliani declared. “Politely to current world leaders, the sport is more important than them and football will survive their administration and their policies. It's the essence of our game, that it is more significant than one leader and more important than a nation.”
LA Games Warning
During the event, Trump’s reply to a question about the Massachusetts city extended to a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.
“When I thought Los Angeles was not sufficiently organized, I would relocate it to an alternate venue as needed,” Trump stated. “On that one I may have to obtain a alternative consent, but we would do that.”
The permission Trump mentioned would need to come through the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their leader, she, was elected to her role in spring and has so far not meet publicly with the former president, although she stated that she would like a discussion with Trump at eventually.
Other Remarks
He also questioned California governor Newsom’s handling of the LA wildfires, remarking that a parallel incident could lead to the relocation of the Olympics.
“In case the governor is uncooperative, we’re gonna have to be firm,” the former president commented.
The warning was similarly clear for Boston.
“The city better improve their situation,” he remarked. “That’s all my message.”
